Bristol Clean Air Zone and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles 2026 Guide
Bristol Clean Air Zone
If you are looking for a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) and regularly travel into Bristol, it is worth checking whether the vehicle meets the requirements of Bristol’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ).
The good news is that most modern WAVs will meet the required emissions standard and will not be subject to the daily charge. However, some wheelchair accessible vehicles may also qualify for an exemption depending on how the vehicle is registered with the DVLA.
What is the Bristol Clean Air Zone?
Bristol’s Clean Air Zone was introduced on 28 November 2022 to help reduce air pollution in the city.
The zone does not ban vehicles from entering Bristol. Instead, vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standard may have to pay a daily charge.
For cars and light commercial vehicles that are subject to the charge, the current rate is £9 per day. The zone operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Does a wheelchair accessible vehicle have to pay the Bristol Clean Air Zone charge?
Not necessarily.
Being a wheelchair accessible vehicle does not, by itself, automatically make a vehicle exempt from the Clean Air Zone.
However, vehicles in the disabled tax class or disabled passenger tax class are nationally exempt from Clean Air Zone charges. This exemption is applied automatically, so there is no separate Bristol application to make.
This is an important distinction when buying a used WAV.
A vehicle may have previously been registered in the disabled tax class by its previous owner, but that does not necessarily mean that the next owner will be entitled to continue using that tax class.
What about a Blue Badge?
A Blue Badge on its own does not currently provide an exemption from the Bristol Clean Air Zone charge.
Bristol’s temporary Blue Badge exemptions ended on 31 March 2023. If your vehicle is not compliant with the emissions requirements, you should therefore not assume that having a Blue Badge means you can drive into the zone without paying.
What emissions standard does a vehicle need?
For most WAV buyers, the important standards are:
| Vehicle | Minimum standard to avoid the charge |
|---|---|
| Petrol | Euro 4 |
| Diesel | Euro 6 |
| Fully electric | No charge |
| Hydrogen fuel cell | No charge |
As a general guide, Euro 4 petrol vehicles are typically from around 2006 onwards, while Euro 6 diesel vehicles are generally from late 2015 onwards. However, the vehicle’s actual emissions information should always be checked rather than relying solely on its registration year.
How do I check if a WAV is Bristol Clean Air Zone compliant?
The easiest and most reliable way is to use the government’s Clean Air Zone vehicle checker.
Enter the vehicle registration number and the checker will tell you whether the vehicle is subject to a Clean Air Zone charge.
An important point when buying a used WAV
There is something that WAV buyers need to be aware of when using the government vehicle checker.
If a vehicle has previously been registered in the disabled tax class, the checker may show that it is exempt from Clean Air Zone charges.
That does not necessarily mean that the vehicle will remain exempt when you become the registered keeper.
If you are not entitled to use the disabled tax class, the vehicle’s taxation class may change when it is transferred into your name.
For this reason, if you are buying a WAV and you regularly travel into Bristol, I would recommend checking the vehicle’s Euro emissions standard as well as its current tax class.
That way, you know the vehicle will still be suitable even if its taxation class changes.
What if my WAV does not meet the emissions standard?
If the vehicle is not exempt and does not meet Bristol’s emissions standard, the current charge for a car or light goods vehicle is £9 per day.
The charge applies each day the vehicle is driven within the Clean Air Zone.
There are some additional exemptions and specific circumstances covered by Bristol City Council, including certain specialist vehicles and hospital-related exemptions. These have their own eligibility requirements and should be checked before assuming that a vehicle qualifies.
