Is a Citroen Berlingo the same as Peugeot Partner WAV Car

A question I get asked almost every week is:

Are the Citroen Berlingo and the Peugeot Partner the same vehicle?

The other scenario is that a customer walks into the showroom saying “I am interested in that Peugeot Partner over there” (pointing to a car on the forecourt when in fact they are point towards a Citroen Berlingo).

Well, it is easy to get them confused so I thought I would try and offer some clarity between them. You’re welcome!

What’s the difference between a Citroen Berlingo and a Peugeot Partner WAV Car?

Essentially these cars are the same as each other and are exactly the same size and share the same body/Chassis. If you were looking at the exterior of both vehicles with the badges removed it would be almost impossible to tell these vehicles apart when viewed from either the side or rear. It is not until you look at the front vehicles that you notice the most distinctive difference between them, which is that they have different front car bumpers and front grills.

In 2015 both models received a facelift with a redesigned front bumper. The vehicles shown in the pictures are the facelifted models.

Mechanically they share the same engines, gearboxes, suspension, and brake components.  Interior wise it is pretty much the same story the dashboard and switches are identical in both vehicles. The only small area they differ inside is that they have a different seat fabric pattern but the design and shape of the seats are identical too.

When it comes to specification both the Berlingo and Partner come equipped with Air Conditioning, Remote Central Locking, Electric Front windows, Electric Mirrors. Radio/CD Player, Bluetooth phone connection (2015 onward) Driver and Passenger Airbags. Power Steering, Anti-lock Brakes. Trip Computer, Front Fog Lights. Additionally, some of the higher specification models or special edition vehicles may also come equipped with Alloy Wheels, Electric Folding Mirrors, Cruise Control, Front Arms Rest, Factory Fitted Parking Sensors. Roof Rails, but what is available on one is normally available on the other.

Wheelchair Accessible Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner

When you compare the difference between a Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner wheelchair accessible vehicle it a slightly different story. As I have mentioned in a previous post neither Citroen nor Peugeot manufacturer a factory wheelchair accessible vehicle. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are built by specialized companies who take a standard vehicle as a base and then adapted it into a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

When these companies decide to base their design on either a Peugeot Partner or Citroen Berlingo they will only use one and not a combination of them both.  As a rule, Allied Vehicles seem to use a Peugeot Partner whereas GM Coachworks and Automotive Group seem to primarily use a Citroen Berlingo for their conversions.

No matter which company has converted it and what base vehicle has been used it will still do the same job and will be available in a similar seating configuration. However, each wheelchair vehicle manufacture does have its own distinctive design features.

Fold-Flat Ramp Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

For example, A Peugeot Partner wheelchair accessible vehicle that has been converted by Allied Vehicles will be more than likely to be fitted with their unique Fexlifold rear ramp, this ingenious ramp can be folded flat into the vehicle when not in use to create a useful flat boot floor. So, if you were looking to purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with this “Fold Flat Ramp” feature was then you would need to consider a Peugeot Partner rather than a Citroen Berlingo.

If you look at a Citroen Berlingo that has been converted by GM Coachworks you will notice that it has a longer Bi-fold ramp that offers a shallower climb for easier loading and unloading of the wheelchair. Additionally, on the three-seat version, the third rear seat is still the original full-size seat and not a trimmed down version that is offered in the same configuration built by Allied Vehicles or Automotive Vehicle conversion. Also, with the GM Coachworks Berlingo this third seat can be folded up or simply removed (no tools needs) to create more space if required something else not on the other two conversions.

With a Citroen Berlingo converted by the Automotive Group, they offer one of the widest ramps available when compared to the other two companies listed in this article. Although this is now only marginal when compared to Allied vehicle Peugeot Partner built from 2016 onwards. Automotive also carpet the lowered rear floor section that some people consider offers a more luxury space for the wheelchair passenger. Another Automotive Group design feature available on a Citroen Berlingo is the extended one-piece rear floor section that goes from the rear of the vehicle to just behind the front seat. This extra length can be very welcome for those customers looking to transport a larger mobility scooter.
