Wheelchair Accessible Citroen Berlingo Multispace

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle UK WAV new and used cars

I thought I’d take a moment to walk you around an example of a Citroën Berlingo wheelchair accessible vehicle that we regularly have for sale here in Somerset.

This particular one was converted by Automotive Group and has seating for two, plus space for the wheelchair passenger or mobility scooter.

Two seats in the front and plenty of space in the back.

Not having a rear seat gives you loads more room, which makes it ideal for larger mobility scooters. It also comes with a winch, which you can see there in the centre with the orange strap.

It has a lightweight bifold aluminium ramp, which is nice and easy to operate and is probably one of the lightest ramp systems you can get.

This is a one-owner car, ex-Motability, so it comes with a full service history. It has covered 24,000 miles from new. I’m not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but it’s also a petrol. You don’t get many petrol ones, as a lot of these are diesel, so that’s quite nice.

Let’s take you around and show you inside. There you go, 24,700 miles. It comes with a radio CD player and Bluetooth, so you can play your mobile phone through it. Air conditioning, electric windows, central locking, and electrically adjustable mirrors.

They’re quite basic, but they have all the essentials. This one also comes with two keys.

So there you have it. If you’re interested in a wheelchair accessible vehicle, then please do get in contact. We have others in stock as well. As mentioned earlier, we’re based down in Weston-super-Mare, nice and easy to get to from the M5.

Wheelchair Accessible Citroen 2026 Sale

For anyone who is looking to purchase their first wheelchair accessible or even update a previous vehicle then a Citroen Berlingo Multispace is a great vehicle to consider. What makes the Citroen Berlingo so popular as a wheelchair accessible vehicle is its ability to carry up to four people plus a wheelchair passenger or mobility scooter yet is it only a few centimetres longer than a Ford Focus hatchback.

Also, the Citroen Berlingo WAV is great value for money when compared to other similar-sized wheelchair accessible vehicles yet still offers the same features.

Citroen Berlingo with Disabled Accessibility Features

It may come as a surprise to some, but a wheelchair accessible Citroen Berlingo is not built by Citroen instead they are built by specialist companies who use the Citroen Berlingo Multispace as a base vehicle and then adapted to make it suitable for a wheelchair passenger.

This process involves lowering the vehicle’s rear floor section to provide sufficient head height for the wheelchair passenger. The removal of all or some of the rear seats to provide space for the wheelchair. The installation of a rear ramp so the wheelchair can access the vehicle. The fitting of a 4 x Point wheelchair restraint system to safely secure the wheelchair while in transit. Also, if required the fitting of an electric winch to assist with loading of the wheelchair passenger.

Citroen Berlingo that can carry a wheelchair passenger

Most Citroen Berlingo WAV vehicles are available with various multi-seat configurations to best suit your needs. As I mentioned earlier some of the rear seats are removed during the conversion process to make space for the wheelchair passenger below is a typical list of the seating configurations that are available.

  • 2 x Front Seats plus wheelchair passenger.
  • 2 x Front and 1 x Rear Seat plus wheelchair passenger.
  • 2 x Front and 2 x Rear Seats (one either side) plus wheelchair passenger.
  • 2 x Front and 3 x Rear seats no wheelchair, fold up 2 x Rear Seats to make room for the wheelchair passenger**

**Depending on the size of the wheelchair if the wheelchair passenger can transfer to one of the standard vehicle seats you can sometimes remove the footrests from the wheelchair, and it will just fit in behind the row of three rear seats.

Adapted Citroen Berlingo Features

Engines

The Citroen Berlingo is available with either 1.6 Diesel or 1.6 Petrol. However, the majority of wheelchair accessible Citroen Berlingo seem to be fitted with the 1.6 HDi diesel engine.

Gearboxes

The Citroen Berlingo is available in either a manual or automatic gearbox with the diesel engine variants.  The petrol engine variant is only available with a manual gearbox. The later Citroen Berlingo model from 2020 does offer a petrol engine with an automatic gearbox combination.

Equipment

Most Citroen Berlingo will come equipped with standard features such as Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Remote Central Locking, Electric Front Windows, Electric Mirrors, Bluetooth phone connection (2015 model onwards) Driver and Front Passenger Airbags, Radio/CD Player, Height Adjustable Drivers Seat. Driver and Front Passenger Front Airbags.

Some of the higher specification Berlingo models like the XTR and Flair or Special Edition models may also have extras such as Alloy Wheels, Electric Folding Exterior Mirrors, Climate Control Air conditioning, factory fitted rear parking sensors, Front Side Airbags, Roof Rails, Privacy Glass

What’s it like to drive.

Despite the Citroen Berlingo Multispace being based upon a van, it drives much more like a car than a van. I suppose that’s why it is classed as an MPV (Multi-purpose vehicle). With its higher driving position, it offers a good vision of the road and makes access to the vehicle nice and easy making it perfect for someone with poor mobility.

When it comes to performance it isn’t a rocket ship but having a 0 -60 time of less than 5 seconds is not generally of high priority in a wav vehicle.  So whichever you choose, both the petrol or diesel engine will get up to 70 mph easily enough and pulls hard enough through the gears and is more than adequate for most people’s needs.

The 6-speed automatic gearbox is a single clutch system so is not as refined as some of the double-clutch systems that are fitted in some other makes, but it gets the job done. Yes, it has a slight pause between gear changes, but this is something you soon get used to.
